Castleford Fishing Derby History

The winter fishing derby ran in Castleford from 1987 to 1992. Don and Barb Storie, proprietors or Storie's Variety in Castleford organized the annual derby. Peter Leavoy snowplowed and set up the river with a lot of help from local volunteers. People donated money and prizes along with donations from suppliers of the store.

Sleivert's Portable Canteen set up on the shore to serve food and refreshments. Mark Van Dusen from CJOH Regonal Contact attended the derby one year and a clip of the derby was on CJOH later that evening.

Don McCord provided sleigh rides.

Storie's Variety held registration and license sales.

The supper was prepared by the Castleford Women's Institute and was server at the Horton Sportsplex. After supper, the awards were given out and a dance followed. The average registration was 300 people.

A summer week-long fishing derby in 1990. There was nightly live entertainment. There was a talent show, hot tub. Local people in the area donated cash and prizes. Some of the sponsers included: Scott's Hardware, Leavoy Construction, and Clint Leavoy Backhoeing.
